Jimmy (The Raven) Cullinane
Dunmore East is a small fishing village on
the south-east coast of Ireland, 16kms from
the city of Waterford.
It sits on the western side of the Waterford
Harbour Estuary, 4.8kms from Hook Head in
Wexford.
Dunmore East, Co. Waterford,
Ireland
We first met Jimmy in the early seventies, and he attended many parties and late night sessions with us during that
time. We were forever trying to get him home on Sunday mornings to ‘milk the cows’, and once even managed it on
the back seat of a speeding Honda 750cc motorcycle.
Jimmy will be remembered as a true gentleman with respect and dignity, who enjoyed a bottle of stout, and of
course his songs and hurling match commentaries were famous. He sang The Hucklebuck, and Kilcash, but he will
mostly be remembered for his version of ‘The Old Bog Road’. He was a Dunmore East character, one of a few, and
warmed the hearts of all who knew him. Hurling was Jimmy’s great passion in life, he was a Waterford supporter,
and attended as many games as he could, and would give you statistics right back to when Waterford last won an all
Ireland final.
We of course would shout for Cork or Galway just to stir him up, and I can remember he knocked me to the floor one
day in the Anchor Bar after Cork had beaten Waterford in a Munster final. He then stood on me with a Wellington
boot and called me a traitor to the cause. All for a laugh I might add, as these were the type of laughs we had back
then, and no offence was taken or given.
We are all very sad to learn of Jimmy’s death, to his family and friends we offer our feelings of sadness, but would
ask them to always remember that Jimmy lived a simple life to the full, and enjoyed every moment of it.
Thank you Jimmy Cullinane for all the memories and laughs we had together, we will all miss you very very much,
and maybe sometime again you will give us The Old Bog Road in the life hereafter.
Honourable Men and Women
