Neddy Farrell's Book of the Deceased

Edward (Neddy) Farrell RIP 19/12/1902 – 5/2/1997.

Neddy Farrell resided at 3 Glenview Terrace Dunmore East for most of his life. He was the original recorder of this book which we have placed on the web site in his honour. In the book he has recorded the deaths of local Dunmore East people from the 10/2/1971 , up to July 1995 when as you can see he could no longer write very well. Neddy Farrell worked as an Overseer with Waterford County Council for most of his life. He was also a member of the old IRA and throughout his life was a staunch republican.

Neddy Farrell is buried in Killea Church yard opposite the church bell on the right hand side in the Spencer plot. He was buried with his mother Mary (Minnie) Farrell who died in 1954. Other family members buried there are as follows:

  • Grandfather Richard Farrell died 16/10/1892 age 66
  • Grandmother Mary E Farrell nee Kearney died 15/3/1923 age 85
  • Uncle Martin Farrell drowned while home on holidays from America . He was taking part in a Yawl race during the Dunmore East Regatta of the 22/7/1890 . He was 24 years old.

Neddy Farrell was born in Killea. Another old Dunmore Warrior John Bulligan Power was born in a row of thatched houses that once stood at the entrance to the wood near The Ship Restaurant. Ned often told the story of how as a young child attending Killea School and being an older boy, John Bulligan's Mother charged him with bringing John to school on his first day. Ned would laugh and say that it was he who first took John to School, he held John's hand and together they walked up to Killea.

Ned Farrell died on the 5/2/97 and John (Bulligan) Power on the 26/2/97 . They almost made their final journey together, there was 21 days in the difference.
